Everyone hears the news and experts touting that we need to save the planet. Eco-friendly ideas whether in the way you eat or how you get to work are extremely popular and afford many of us a way to feel like we are doing our part. When we travel we do NOT have to give up those eco-friendly ideal just because we are away from home. In fact, many of those eco-friendly ideas will possibly help another developing country more than it would help our own.
Of course, we all know that we need a Us Passport and often a visa to visit a preferred destination; and we also know that we need to make arrangements in advance to insure we can do what we plan on doing. Once we have crossed all our t’s and dotted all our I’s, we are ready to head out the door! But you may want to consider these eco-friendly tips to help not just your own neighborhood but your neighbor half-way across the world.
Do you know what the number one environmental hazard when traveling out of country by those of us in the US or Canada? Plastic water bottles. Yep, that may seem hard to believe, but even in the United States only about 25% of all plastic drinking bottles are actually recycled. In many countries you may visit they may not even have the technology or resources to recycle those bottles. But you do have options!
You can actually purchase a reusable water bottle with a built-in filtration system. You can also purchase water purification tablets that will clean just about any water making it tasty and healthy in about 30 minutes. You do have options that are eco-friendly and affordable.
Another unfriendly concept many of us take with us without thinking is batteries. Eco-friendly choices will allow you to get the power you need and want without leaving your mark on the environment. Of course, in an ideal world, we would leave all of our electronics at home while we enjoy our vacation, but the truth is we are extremely attached to our electronics whether it is the laptop, the handheld game system, or that digital camera.
An eco-friendly solution is to take rechargeable batteries with you on your journey. Of course, you can also purchase a solar battery if you plan on traveling in sunny locations, but that can take a while. If you do have batteries that are no good or burnt out, do not toss them in the garbage. Take them home and dispose of them properly. Whether you are eco-friendly to save money or to save the environment, you will discover that you can be eco-friendly while traveling with just these two tips. Of course, you will want to insure you are ready to go on that next vacation by planning ahead and getting that US Passport and visa (if required) well in advance. Having fun can be easy and eco-friendly if you plan ahead.
