Applying and obtaining your US passport
may seem rather difficult. But the truth is that applying for and obtaining your
US passport is not difficult. Do not let the forms, requirements, or passport
photos intimidate you. First time US passport applicants will find that it is
easier than ever to get your passports without a lot of hassles or fees. Be warned… it is impossible to get “next
day” US passports! If you find a company making such a claim run the other way! The first step to obtaining your US
passport is to apply for that US passport. You will need to start with a form.
The type of form will depend on your age and whether you apply for a passport
card or passport book. However, most people will find obtaining the form itself
easy enough thanks to the internet. First time US passport applicants will need
to find Form DS-11. Form DS-11 is 6 pages long. However, 4 pages of Form DS-11
are instructions and only 2 pages of Form DS-11 are the actual application. The second step means filling out Form
DS-11. The first page of Form DS-11 contains basic information such as name,
address, phone number, birth place, and parental information; the second page of
Form DS-11 contains additional information such as hair color, eye color,
emergency contact information, and travel plans. Warning: All statements and documents
are subject to verification. False statements made knowingly and willfully in
the application are punishable by fine and/or imprisonment. Be as truthful as possible. Not only can
false statements cause severe criminal charges, but false statements or missing
fields on the form can delay your US passport. If you have questions, you should
contact a professional such as VIP Passports that can help you fill out the
application. The third step is gathering necessary
documentation. This is the step that causes pause with many people applying for
a US passport. The documentation will vary greatly depending on the age of the
applicant. Proof of citizenship is necessary – a birth certificate. A birth certificate is easy enough to obtain for an individual born within the United States. However, not all US citizens were born within the United States. In addition, some individuals born within the United States never had a birth certificate filed. Proof of identity is the next required
document. Your identification must contain a physical description or a
photograph that is a good likeness of you AND a signature. You can find
this with a regular state identification card or state issued driver’s license. Two recent color photographs are
required. These photographs are probably the most difficult part of the US
passport process. You can find numerous companies in your local area capable of
providing you with acceptable passport photos. The requirements are extremely
precise and should not be attempted by a novice. The final stage for the first time US passport applicants is to submit the application, required documentation, and fees. If you need assistance with a complicated or simple US Passport, VIP Passports is here to help!
