Few people enjoy the thrill of standing in line waiting to apply for their US Passport. For children, this can be downright tedious and irritating often based on the age of the child and your capacity to stay cool with bored, tired, and hungry children. But these days obtaining a US passport for children is just as necessary for obtaining one for you. Recent changes have made it a regulation to obtain a US passport if you have plans on traveling by air in or out of the US borders, and this regulation is for men, women, and children of all ages. Obtaining a passport for children does not have to be too time consuming or difficult. A little bit of planning goes a long way in saving you time (and your sanity) when it comes to applying for and obtaining your passport for children. What is considered the age of a child? While the regulations are different for some minors a passport is still required to leave OR enter the United States. What form(s) is a minor required to have filled in order to apply? The form necessary is called Form DS-11: Application for a U.S. Passport. What are the requirements for minors under the age of 16 years old? · Must not sign the application · Must apply in person with both parents or guardians · Must provide Social Security number · Must provide additional documentation such as evidence of US citizenship, evidence of relationship between adult and minor child · Identification of parents or guardians · A photocopy of each parent or guardian identification documentation · Parental consent of BOTH parents or BOTH guardians · Pay the application fee · Submit appropriate passport photos What is considered evidence of US citizenship for a minor? · A previously issued, undamaged US Passport · Consular report of birth abroad or certification of birth · Naturalization certificate · Certificate of citizenship · Certified birth certificate issued by the city, county, or state What is evidence of relationship? · Minor’s certified US birth certificate with BOTH parents’ names · Minor’s certified foreign birth certificate with BOTH parents’ names · Adoption decree with adopting parents’ names · Court order establishing custody OR guardianship · Minor’s report of birth abroad with both parents’ names Applying for and obtaining a US Passport for children is not too difficult. The process may seem complicated and obscure if you are new to the process, but if you have assistance, you will discover it is a breeze. Having better service means getting the job done right the first time. Remember, one error and you could be denied, or worse, denied. Trust the people who know.
