Even if you do not take more than two pets, you may want to contact your local Mexican consulate just to let them know of your plans!
Now for some good news… Mexico does not have a required quarantine for pets traveling to Mexico. However, you will discover than even though you can travel freely with your pets in Mexico, you may have to follow the guidelines of your choice of airlines, ocean liners, and/or other form of transportation.
So now your pets can freely enter and leave Mexico. Now what?
When you arrive in Mexico, you will probably want to stay at a hotel, inn, motel, or other form of lodgings. Unfortunately, not all such accommodations are “pet friendly”. If they are pet friendly, they may take cats but not dogs, or take dogs but not cats. Contacting your lodgings beforehand to find out their pet policy is just a good idea all the way around.
In addition, you may want to ensure that your domestic helpers or household know of your plans. While most household helpers or household you hire while visiting Mexico are quite good at caring for your favorite pet, it is polite to inform the staff of your intentions beforehand. For instance, maybe one of the household helpers is allergic to cat dander.
Did you know that most dogs you see being walked in Mexico are in fact being walked by household helpers?
Another excellent point to keep in mind is that you will find copious parks all through Mexico. When it comes to pets traveling to Mexico, you will want to stay polite and follow the rules. Not all parks will allow pets, and if they do, you may discover that pets are allowed only during certain hours. Ask if you are not sure!
Remember, Mexico is a hospitable country to both humans and their companions. If you do choose that you want your pets traveling to Mexico, be polite. Clean up after your canine companion, and remember, your pet can be affected by bad experiences as well.
