If you are like my family and friends, you are curious as to the differences between the new US Passport cards and the more traditional US Passport books. When it comes to US Passport card versus passport book, the winner will depend on your need. But the good news is you can hold both forms of documentation legally if you are a United States citizen.
While the US Passport cards could be applied for In February or 2008, they were not issued until June of 2008. Do you think this stopped people from applying? No! Millions of US citizens awaited their new form of identification simply because this is an affordable and convenient way to get from one place to the other. See, the US Passport card is about the size of a regular credit card.
So how does it look when we do the passport card versus passport book overview?
Passport Card: Valid for travel by sea or land only. Limited to travel between the US, and Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. This card is NOT valid as a passport when traveling by air, but you can use the passport card for identification purposes.
Passport Book: Valid for all forms of travel by land, sea, and air.
Passport Card: Costs $ 30.00 for an Adult and $ 15.00 for a Minor.
Passport Book: Cost for First Time Adult - $ 110.00. First Time Minor - $ 80.00
Passport Card and the Passport Book: Valid for 10 years for an adult and 5 years for a minor.
Passport Card: About the size of a credit card making it convenient to store.
Passport Book: Bulkier.
Passport Card: Has a RFID chip that allows personnel to retrieve stored personal information from a governmentally secured database. No personal information is contained on the passport card making it safer should it be found or stolen.
Passport Book: Personal information easily available.
Passport Book: Cannot easily be upgraded to from a passport card.
While having a US Passport card is great and affordable, if you need an emergency trip home, you may decide that a US Passport book is more your liking. No one expects an emergency, and whether you plan or not plan to travel by air, you will require a US passport book.
When it comes to the passport card versus passport book, the decision falls on your shoulders. Saving money in our tough times is a lot easier if you only plan on traveling to our bordering countries, but if you plan on traveling out of the country in the next 10 years, you may want to go ahead and invest in a US passport book.
It is important to remember that you can have both forms of documentation legally if you are a US citizen. If you cannot decide on which is right for you, choose both! You will discover you have an exceptional form of identification that is legally accepted at just about anywhere.
