However, there are situations that may arise where an emergency means last minute planning is the only option. If using Form DS-82 the word EXPEDITED should be clearly marked on the envelope. This will help your application get to where it needs to go in a swift manner. With the word EXPEDITED on the envelope, the receiving agency can get your application opened faster.

Note: Do NOT write “expedited” on an application envelope without the application fee and the expedited fee in the envelope. You will find your application delayed or denied.

It is highly suggested that you use a traceable form of mail delivery. In addition, you should two day deliver your application to insure your mail does not get lost on route to the agency. This helps prove when you mailed the passport application and where the application is thanks to the addition of tracking numbers.

Insure you send the proper type of application fee payment. Some agencies allow credit cards, debit cards, checks, or a combination of the above. However, not all agencies are required to accept all forms of payments. If you are not sure, contact the issuing agency for more details.

While the best way to get your US passport is to plan well in advance this is not always feasible.
