Department of State Requirements for Passport Photos.

YOU MUST HAVE TWO PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPHS.
Submit two identical passport photographs of you by yourself. Make sure they are recent passport photos and a good likeness of you (normally taken within the last 3 months), 2 x 2 inches in size, with an image size from bottom of chin to top of head (including hair) of between 1 and 1-3/8 inches. Passport photographs must be clear, front view, full face, taken in normal street attire (NO UNIFORMS of any kind are accepted, including firemen and police officers, etc.) Take passport photos without a hat or dark glasses, and passport photos must be printed on thin paper with a plain light (white or off-white) background. Passport photos must be color only. They must be capable of withstanding a mounting temperature of 225 degrees Fahrenheit (107 degrees Celsius). Passport photographs that are retouched so that your appearance is changed are unacceptable. Snapshots from most vending machine prints, and magazine or full-length photographs are unacceptable.

DO NOT PRINT YOUR OWN PASSPORT PHOTOS - the government specifications are strict and this could cause a delay in obtaining your passport.

Hint: If you are wearing a white shirt remember your photos will be taken against a white wall so if you want to appear more colorful in your photos wear something colorful.

United States passports are issued through Passport Agencies located in 18 States. They are Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, D.C., Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, If you live outside the United States, US citizen applications must go in person to the U.S. embassy or consulate in the country you are in.
