Applying for your typical US passport can take anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks. There are a lot of factors that go into obtaining your US passport, but sometimes, you need that US passport sooner rather than later. There are differing techniques for obtaining your passport in a hurry depending on whether it is a preference or an emergency. Regardless of why you need your documentation in a hurry, you will find it is easier than imagined to receive this important piece of documentation almost overnight.

An emergency first time passport or renewal passport is only available upon documentation or proof of a life or death situation. You can receive your emergency US passport quickly and professional in a matter of days rather than weeks in just a few easy steps.

Step One: Gather Necessary US Passport Documentation

You will need:

Completed Form DS-11 (Do NOT sign!) – Obtain Form DS-11 online for faster service.

Proof of US Citizenship – A valid US driver’s issued more than 6 months ago is acceptable, or you can choose any other number alternative forms of documents.

Two Passport Photos – You will need two identical passport photos meeting acceptable guidelines as stated by the photo regulations.

Letter of Authorization – A US passport processing authorization letter can be obtained at a variety of locations online.

Proof of Departure – A proof of departure document is necessary. Acceptable forms of this document would be a foreign travel plane ticket, a printed travel itinerary proving foreign travel, or if on a business trip, a business letter from your employer.

Fees – The government fees and VIP Passport Services fees must be included.

Once you are ready, you will need to visit a US passport acceptance facility, and notify the agency that this is an “expedited” or “emergency” application depending on your situation. Remember, an emergency passport application takes special rules but the same documentation. Anyone can expedite his or her passport application for a fee. State your intentions upfront.

At this point, you will take about 10 to 15 minutes as the agent verifies your identity, has you sign the forms, verifies your need for an expedited passport, and then seal all of your documentation into a single envelope. Once you pay the necessary fees, you will then have your envelope professionally mailed by the passport acceptance agency.

You do not have to allow the agent to mail the envelope. While some agencies are not apt to give over the envelope, you can request the envelope for your own delivery.
