One of the pleasures of being able to travel is taking the kids to see new and exotic destinations. Traveling abroad with children is not difficult with a little planning, and the rewards make any small issues that may arise seem small in comparison. In fact, many travel agencies and air lines offer discounts for adults traveling with their kids.
Traveling abroad with children takes some forethought and planning. However, once you have accomplished this once, you will find it is easier subsequent journeys. There are many tips that will help you ease into this process whether you are a first-timer or an old pro.
A few tips for traveling abroad with children…
Get plenty of rest before the departure. Children need sleep, as do adults. However, a tired adult is much better at suppressing that tiredness. With kids, you will notice crankiness, tantrums, agitation, and other forms of acting out. Kids need to sleep in order to be prepared for the beginning of their journey. In addition, be sure your kids get a good, comfortable sleep each night.
Keep the same routines
Just because you are vacationing or moving internationally does not mean the rules do not apply. Keep the same routines and rules while out of the home that you have for when at home. Make sure the meal plans stay relatively the same, and that you do not allow the kids to get away with not following the rules of your home. This adds to consistency and allows you to easily transition back into life after you return home.
Bring a favorite toy
Bringing favorite toys allows your child to have something from home to ward of homesickness. In addition, you will find that it helps appease those anxious moments and aids in helping sleep. One point to mention is that carefully consider whether or not to make a favorite toy an electronic toy.
Be prepared
Having your documents such as US Passports, visas (if needed), and other forms of identification ready at the airport. Delays are going to cause restlessness and crankiness. No one appreciates a noisy child especially the child. When you have your documents prepared and ready to go, you will find that you have a shorter wait at the check-in and at the security checkpoints.
Watch the food
While eating local cuisine is great, many delicate little stomachs cannot adjust as quickly as an adults. Try to keep the food mild and try new foods sparingly. This holds true for younger children and tends to fade as the children age. Of course, you can still try some of the exotic foods of the location, but remember, test the food yourself to see if you think it will fit your child’s pallet.
When traveling abroad with children, the world opens up. You are creating memories that will last a lifetime, and you are going to appreciate the time together. Be prepared, and everything will run a lot smoother from departure from home until you return.
