When it comes time to travel for business or pleasure, chances are you prepare for just about anything. You packed all your socks, you have your US Passport, you have all your itineraries, and you left the kids at the sitters. However, if you are taking a family vacation or your travel with your children, you will find that the unexpected suddenly becomes the expected.
Traveling with kids can be quite rewarding. In fact, ask any parent or guardian that happens to travel regularly with children, and they will tell you the same thing: “If you prepare for the unexpected, you will have an outstanding time with your children whether you travel to a local park or to another continent.”
First, remember that the younger the child, the shorter the attention span. Too much input can cause crankiness and irritability. As the child is attempting to process all the new information coupled with the excitement, children will often turn into little goblins. With a little bit of planning, you can ensure that traveling with kids is rewarding not just for the children but the adults as well.
Bring a favorite snack
Children tend to need food more often than their adult counterparts. Generally, small snacks are appropriate. While you will not want to give the kids snacks which will cause frequent bathroom breaks or diaper changes, you can find snacks that are going to find foods easy on the stomach and even easier on your schedule.
Try foods such as granola, bananas, cheerios, and crackers. Try for foods that are not going to add a lot of sugar to their already excitable body. In addition, keep the drinks simple and small. Try for water if at all possible or fruit drinks made from 100% fruit.
Bring a favorite toy
Traveling with kids is made a lot easier if you plan ahead. If your children has the comfort of home, the children will tend to be less fussy allowing for fun for everyone. Try for something small such as a stuffed animal, a security blanket, or even travel-sized board games.
Stay away from the handheld video games. This will tend to draw the child’s attention away from family time. Video games are okay for the home environment, but this is a special time for the entire family. Ensure your child is participating.
Be prepared
If you happen to be traveling with kids, you will want to ensure you have all the documentation on hand before you get to your destination. No one is going to have fun at the airport if you did not pack the appropriate documentation. Even children, depending on their age, will need a US Passport to enter or leave the United States. You may also want a copy of his or her immunizations.
Traveling with kids can be a lot of fun for everyone. However, as the adult, it is your responsibility to prepare and to prepare well. Avoid crankiness of your child by ensuring you have a few things to remind that child of home. In addition, keep in mind that children need US Passports too!
